There is only one real soapy massage parlor (aap-op-nuat) in Udon Thani and that’s Oscar in the western part of town not too far from Nong Prajak Park. There are about 10-15 girls in the fishbowl and 3-5 sideliners on the red couch at most times. Prices are 1,600 Baht for the fishbowl girls and 1,900 Baht for the sideline girls. The atmosphere at Oscars is quite relaxed, you’ll see many Thai guys just hanging out for hours drinking beer before picking one of the girls (or not).
The papasan is very friendly, not pushing at all and does speak some basic English. The quality of girls may not be as great as in Bangkok, but there are a couple of young, white skinned and quite hot sideline girls, most of them have no children (you can ask the papasan of course). Otherwise quite an old building and the same for the rooms that have seen better times, but it’s still alright and if you pick the right girl it’s definitely worth it.

Yes there are ‘extras’ available, but in many cases, you may not get a full service, although some girls just about throw themselves at you for ‘boom boom’. The average price for a foot massage, which includes legs all the way up to the thighs, is in the region of 200 baht for a one hour massage, with an all over body oil massage, being in the region of 300 baht.
Prices for each massage parlour are normally very clearly displayed, and those that can speak at least a little English will display prices in English too. You will see these all around the farang Udon Thani nightlife area. Most of the massage parlours have been created in the same way, with a small open section at the front of the building and three curtained ‘booths’ behind, for a little privacy, although some have segregated rooms upstairs as well. They are generally very clean, although not always tidy, and fitted with air conditioning, fans, toilets and showers. Do not expect much from the toilet and shower facilities though. They are basic and are in place for functionality as opposed to their aesthetic value. All the toilets I have seen in these massage parlours are what we are used to back in the west, a proper toilet with seat and cistern. Some will have toilet tissue in place, while others do not.
The style of massage you are likely to get varies from girl to girl, but they are all nice and relaxing. You can have a strong massage if you wish, and if your bones and muscles can stand the extra pressure placed on them. If there is any let down in Udon Thani, then it is the lack of ‘real beauties’ that work at these massage parlours, and if they manage to engage you in conversation outside their shop, they can be very persistent, although mostly in a nice way.
Between Nutty Park and Day & Night, you will find ten active massage parlours, along with another nine between Nutty Park and the Night Market. These massage parlours are normally open all day and well in to the evening, normally with three or more girls working. For the ex pat and visitor, having such a wide choice, in such a confined area of the city is quite excellent but from the business perspective of each of the massage parlours, there are just too many and most barely make any money on a day to day basis. Several of them can, and do, go one or two days and not see a single customer wandering in to their premises, especially between May and November.
The massage parlours between Nutty Park and the Night Market are on both sides of the road but I am not at all sure that many of them offer anything other than a ‘proper’ massage is going to be offered (with perhaps to odd exception, depending on who is working there), and are probably a better option if you are in need of a massage that actually sorts out some ailment you have. There are very few girls outside to tempt you in, English is nearly non-existent, and most of the girls that work in these places just seem to be ‘too nice’ to do that sort of thing but I also know from experience that appearances here can be very deceiving.
One thing that has become very noticeable during my exploits is the amount of times that the girls move between massage parlours, and the general turnover in staff appears to be reasonably high in certain massage parlours. So if you are here for any length of time and think you have found one that really suits your needs, there is a chance she could be gone the next week. Having said that, there do seem to be some girls that are in this game for the longer term, and probably actually enjoy what they are doing, providing they are earning a decent living.
As with the bar girls in Udon Thani, many of the girls that work in the Udon Thani massage parlours, especially around Farang Alley work there in the hope of meeting a foreigner, who will take care of them and giving them the opportunity of escaping from their current life. Should you find a girl in a massage parlour you like, then there is no harm in asking if she will spend some time with you, perhaps a night or two at your hotel. If they like you or have a good feeling about you, there is a good chance that she will agree if she has no children to look after back home. However, most of the girls do have young children, so are unlikely to spend a night away from them. Will the girls charge for this companionship? I would guess that nearly every one of them will want money for the pleasure of their company, which is likely to be anywhere from 1000 baht to 2000 baht.
